YouTube monetization requirements for AI video
As of 2026-09 · confidence: high · verified against Google's official YPP page
The two paths to YPP full monetization
To join the YouTube Partner Program at the full monetization tier, a channel needs 1,000 subscribers plus one of:
- 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months, or
- 10,000,000 qualified public Shorts views in the last 90 days.
These are exactly the two paths SerialStorm's threshold tracker follows (ypp_a / ypp_b). Shorts-feed watch time does not count toward the 4,000-hour path — a trap many Shorts-first channels discover at review time.
Does AI-generated content qualify?
YouTube reviews channels, not production methods. AI-generated content is monetizable when it meets the same bar as everything else: original, transformed value you added — narrative, editing, voice, and a consistent identity. What gets rejected (or demonetized per-video) is mass-produced, repetitive content with no meaningful transformation. A serialized show with locked characters, planned beats, and editorial voice is the opposite of that — which is exactly why the Series Bible workflow matters commercially, not just aesthetically.
AI content that realistically depicts people or events must also be disclosed — see our disclosure labeling guide.
What about the "8,000 hours from 2027" rumor?
Community posts circulate a claim that the watch-hour threshold rises to 8,000 around 2027. As of this guide's date, that claim appears on no official page — treat it as a low-confidence rumor. SerialStorm keeps it in a verify note, never in its calculations. If an official change lands, the seed rows update with a new as-of date.
How to reach it faster
- Pick a cadence you can hold for 90 days, not a heroic one you'll drop in three weeks — the Shorts path is a 90-day rolling window.
- Series consistency compounds: returning viewers subscribe. That's a retention argument for character locks.
- Track honestly: record snapshots weekly in the tracker and watch which path is actually faster for your channel.
